The
Pipers
We
met in 1979 when we enrolled in a highland bagpipe class. In the
early 1980's, we were instrumental in the formation of a pipe band
called the Greater Richmond Pipes and Drums and we performed at
many functions in the Richmond and Tidewater areas. During the mid
1980's, our work and other distractions took their toll on our piping,
but in 1999, we reunited as "Two Pipers" to seriously
pursue the study of highland (and now lowland) bagpipe music. Each
October, since our reunion, we have presented an annual concert
at the Bon Air Christian Church to celebrate our progress and share
our love of bagpipe music with the public. We have also been contracted
to play at several local locations and to celebrate key points in
the lives of others by piping for weddings, parties, graduation
ceremonies, dedications, memorial services and other events; recently
opening for Clandestine at the Shady Grove Coffee House.
Over the years,
our interests have focused away from the band setting to solo and
duet performances. Our special love and hallmark is the incorporation
of harmony into many settings of our music. We both share a strong
interest in piobaireachd, the ancient classical music of the highland
bagpipe. We have studied at major one and two week workshops such
as the Invermark College of Piping and the Balmoral School. Through
these workshops, we have been tutored by such notables as Donald
Lindsay, James McIntosh, Norman Gillies, Jim MacGillivray and Jack
Lee. Pursing our interest in the smallpipe, we have also studied
with Ian MacHarg, George Balderose (David) and the manuscripts of
Gordon Mooney, etc. Many a cold winter night has been spent delighting
in, and sharing this special sound.
